This British Army infantry unit was formed in and recruits in the Midlands. It has served in several deployments, including the recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. These became its 1st, 2nd and 3rd battalions respectively.
The regiment is named after Mercia, the Anglo-Saxon kingdom which covered the English Midlands from the 6th to 10th centuries. It bears the Mercian double-headed crowned eagle as its emblem.
The 1st Battalion operates as an armoured infantry unit. Since the regiment's formation, it has served with 4th Mechanised Brigade in Iraq in and in Helmand, Afghanistan in The 2nd Battalion, a light infantry force, also deployed to Helmand in and then to Northern Ireland in After another Afghan tour in , it moved to Chester in England, where it is currently based. In , the 3rd Battalion was merged into the two remaining regular battalions as part of the Army reforms.

Their design includes a memorial stone engraved with the regiment's cap badge and motto, which will be flanked by two silhouettes representing soldiers from and and stood on a resin surface in the regimental colours of cerise and buff. Work is due to get under way on building the memorial after Mr Harrison and Mr Farrall's design was agreed by the Cheshire Regiment Association and approved by the arboretum's landscape and memorial committee.
