What makes a highly sensitive person

My kids were, of course, used to this behavior from Mom, but the other kid? He looked up at me as if he had just discovered Barney the Dinosaur was an alien dinosaur. I devoured her pages, as I was relieved to know that there were other people in the world who hated amusement parks — even as kids — and got overwhelmed in grocery stores. People, other than me, who had to find a body of water somewhere by which to think, reflect, and just be still. My year-old son gets it. He will do anything to get out of having to tag along to the grocery or any store.

He already orders anything he needs online. And every time I shop here I run into at least two people I know. She looks up confused — not as puzzled as the 4-year-old who had never seen an adult meltdown — but a tad baffled. Those reasons are exactly why she loves Whole Foods.

She will probably never lock herself into a tiny Starbucks bathroom in the mall. Originally posted on Sanity Break at Everyday Health. Why do we need to live life? There are many possible answers to that question, and here are 22 of them, together with an exercise to find your own….

Trauma can impact your life in many ways. Sometimes, you may not be aware. These are some of the possible effects it has on childhood and adulthood. A mother shares her advice on how to talk about losing a child. Here's the definition of alogia, and how poverty of speech may relate to some mental health conditions.

Novotni suggests that it is the tendency of people with ADHD to feel overwhelmed that leads to their hypersensitive reactions. This, in turn, contributes to their difficulty in coping emotionally. Take the routine of going to work in the morning, for example.

Most people get out the door without forgetting anything, ready with a game plan for the day. We take on the experiences of others very quickly, like the insect on the leaf that takes on the color of the leaf.

Many of us have discovered positive things about living with ADHD, and a high level of sensitivity may also be used to our advantage. But like ADHD, hypersensitivity must be managed and controlled to let the positive aspects — creativity, empathy, and depth of perception — shine through. Again, thank you for posting this article. I have to deliberately choose not to read anything about people being treated badly, or death, because I absorb it, get furious, or cry, and then try to save the world.

My anxiety is awful! I remember watching Born Free when I was about 7 or 8 years old. When Elsa died I cried, no I sobbed hysterically for hours. Thank you for listening to me. I hate being the way I am. I loved your comment and I recognize almost everything. I hate to socialize but I love talking to my friends, I hate talking on the phone but I love going to a restaurant and talk.

I am not a recluse but I need to be alone sometimes. Always feeling less than others…. I bought a pair of 3M noise blocking headphones at Home Depot, the kind worn for lawn mowing and construction work. Also, having the headphones on helps the highly sensitive parent to maintain composure when asserting behavioral boundaries with kids.

I was called crybaby all the time growing up. Looking back, I am grateful for ingrown toenails… sounds off subject, but read on.

Every night for supper, I was given tea with knox gelatin in it. That was enough caffeine to allow me to somewhat cope. High school was difficult. I made it through college on Dr. I still struggled, but I never could have made it through without it. I think a lot of undiagnosed ADHD is self medicated with caffeine. As usual, I digress.. Thank you! It was awful and it felt like a personal attack on me.

Team members feel more valued as they are allowed to speak and contribute freely, without the prospect of being shut down by an over-anxious leader eager to push their own ideas or move their agenda forward. HSPs are better equipped to lead because they naturally fall to the background, allowing team members to freely speak and share and shine.

And last is resonance. HSPs do this. One additional thing I have noticed is that if HSPs do get leadership positions, they tend to be more stressful for them. Aron : Recognizing them. They thrive on positively worded feedback. Wilding : You have a new book coming out soon about highly sensitive parents. How can highly sensitive parents simultaneously balance the demands of work and home without becoming overwhelmed and overstimulated?

Aron : Parenting can be overstimulating. HSP parents need additional help to manage it. And get enough rest. Wilding : Do you ever see parents throwing themselves into work as a diversion to deal with the overstimulation? I see this all the time in my coaching—where HSPs trade one form of overstimulation for another.

Aron : Yes. The trick is to not take work home with you. That downtime also allows you to be more creative. It gives you an incubation period to come up with new ideas. So the downtime pays off.

Aron : Quieting. Settling down. I believe there are two nervous systems. If you act from the quiet part, then your actions are smarter. Sensitive people tend to see all the ways a situation could go wrong and that makes them anxious. I don't think just thinking positively really works for most sensitivity people. They've got to go ahead and think what they're going to think anyway and then look at the big picture.
